About The Varietal
Rara Neagra, or Băbească Neagră, is a red grape native to Romania and Moldova. It is grown in Moldova's regions of Orhei, Anenii Noi, Straseni, and Ialoveni and in Romania's areas of Moldavia, Dobruja, and Wallachia, where it is the second most widely planted grape. The variety is also in Ukraine and New York, called Sereksiya Charni. The name "Băbească Neagră" translates to "old lady's black" in Romanian, and the wines it produces are typically light-bodied and fruity.
