2018 William Charriat Irancy (Burgundy, FR)

The 2018 vintage in Irancy is regarded as one of the best in recent years, earning a 5 out of 5 rating. It has a deep, rich red color with abundant, generous fruit. The nose is ripe and aromatic, featuring floral and spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is warm with elevated alcohol yet remains well-balanced. It offers concentrated fruit, moderate acidity, a touch of fresh herbal bitterness, and fine tannins that subtly emerge.

    About The Varietal

    César

César is a minor red grape grown in Burgundy, mainly around Irancy. Known for its dark color and tannic nature, it is often blended in small amounts with Pinot Noir to add structure and color, especially in weaker vintages. It contributes to wines under the Irancy AOC and Côteaux Bourguignons appellations. An ancient variety, César has been cultivated in northern Burgundy for over 2,000 years, with recent DNA evidence suggesting it is a cross between Pinot Noir and Argant. Legend claims Roman soldiers introduced the grape, which is reflected in its name and synonyms.
